We explored the leadership style that was created just for physicians: the Wellness-Centered Leadership (WCL) framework. We have tested different ways for leaders to learn about and then execute upon this style with their teams, and we have found a linkage to patient experience outcomes. WCL is unique because it was specifically designed for physician leaders. WCL does not solely depend on general leadership theories and recommendations, and provides detailed mindsets and behaviors for physician leaders to drive staff outcomes. The foundational elements are defined by mindsets executed through behaviors, leading to change and desired results. As the evidence shows, provider wellbeing is tied to patient outcomes and experience; therefore, our system chose to explore impacting both together. Shanafelt et al. (2021) examined 70 years of leadership philosophies to extrapolate the primary components of effective models to align with physician well-being in building the consolidative WCL model.
