Nikki comes to this patient experience work with a Master of Public Administration from the University of Michigan – Dearborn, as well as a Bachelor of Science degree with a major in Criminal Justice from Eastern Michigan University. Currently, she is a Senior Project Manager for the Office of Patient Experience at Michigan Medicine where her work focuses on learning and education for staff, faculty and learners, patient experience improvement work with ambulatory care units, as well as initiatives for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion. Prior to joining the Office of Patient Experience, Nikki worked with the Division of Public Safety and Security (DPSS) at the University of Michigan for over 18 years, specifically with Michigan Medicine Security. In her role at DPSS, Nikki was responsible for the training and education for new hires, security officers, security supervisors and leadership, as well as for Guest Services supervisors and leadership. Her time within DPSS gave her a unique lens with which to view health care and the interactions that happen between patients, families and Michigan Medicine staff and faculty. This experience helped her develop a passion for patient experience and how staff, faculty and learners are supported in providing the best patient care. Nikki has partnered with expert colleagues within the Office of Patient Experience to design and deliver a Medical Improv Skills Lab. This research-based teaching methodology is aimed at using theatre and improvisational exercises to build healthcare professionals’ interpersonal skills, including what matters most to patients and families. In her free time, Nikki loves to spend time with her family and pets. She loves traveling to all places near and far and attending concerts.
At our hospitals, we know our providers care – the question is, how can they show that care in ways patients will recognize? To be effective, patient experience improvement efforts must go beyond describing what to do and give providers concrete practice strategies on how to do it. To meet this need, Michigan Medicine’s Office of Patient Experience has developed trainings using the innovative teaching methodology of “medical improv” to boost providers’ communication skills with patients and families. This session will cover the program’s background, design, implementation, initial impact, and implications for expansion to promote an institutional culture that prioritizes the patient experience.
